Ministry Supports Sports Tourism
The Ministry of Tourism is working in synergy with the Alumni Association of Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). They have two agendas: a reunion and promoting the Wonderful Indonesia brand.
Something unusual happened at a golf tournament on July 14 at Royale Jakarta Golf Club. A Gandrung dance, which is a show typical of Banyuwangi culture, greeted the participants of the tournament before they took to the course.
The unusual performance and photo opportunity was the opening act of the Wonderful Indonesia Golf Tournament. The tournament, which was hosted by Class 90 of the Alumni Association of Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), welcomed 240 golfers. The presence of the Tourism Minister, Arief Yahya, gave an additional boost to the third edition of this tournament.
“To Alumni Association of 90, this event is actually a reunion between alumnus of ITB. However, the Ministry of Tourism supports activities that promote sports tourism such as the golf tournament today because the Alumni Association of 90 is promoting the Ministry of Tourism’s brand through sports tourism," said Arief, who opened the tournament by hitting a smoke ball.
The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index of the World Economic Forum has ranked Wonderful Indonesia as the 47th best branding in the world, beating Amazing Thailand at 68th position and Malaysia Truly Asia at 85th.
The third edition of the Wonderful Indonesia Golf Tournament carried the theme “Indonesian Mountain and Highland Tourism”. “As far as sports tourism, golf has a strong appeal for golf tourists. We have international-level golf courses that appeal to golfers to play and compete in Indonesia, with beautiful mountain scenery,” explained Bagus T Kartika, the Chairman of Wonderful Indonesia Golf Tournament 2018.
Bagus said the potential of golf to attract tourists, especially from abroad, can be increased significantly if it is combined with travel to mountain or highland destinations in Indonesia.
