Princeville Makai Golf Club is a 27-hole golf course only a mile from Princeville Resort. Named one of the "Top 5 Great Golf Settings" in America by National Geographic Traveler, Princeville Makai Golf Club offers magnificent vistas of land and sea at every turn.
Designed by Robert Trent Jones II, the 27 holes of Princeville Makai Golf Club are split into two courses: the 18-hole championship Princeville Makai Ocean Course and the nine-hole Woods Course. First opened for play in 1971, Princeville Makai Golf Club underwent a redesign in 2009, reopening in January 2010. The renovation work included newly reshaped bunkers, two large practice tees, and an expanded practice putting green. Seashore Paspalum grass was used to replace all of the tee box grasses and provides a spectacular playing surface for golfers of all skill levels.
The Ocean Course at Princeville Makai Golf Club is one of the most interesting courses in Kauai. The front-nine features views of the mountains and Hanalei Bay. From the greens, you’ll see local points of interest such as Hideaways Beach and the Queen's Bath. The signature hole of the course is the par-3 7th and it’s easy to see why. With the ocean several hundred feet below the cliffs on the right, tee shots must fly over Turtle Cove beyond the bunker protecting the front of the green. The whole offers one of the most thrilling golf views and playing experiences in Hawaii and has also become a popular spot for weddings and corporate events.
The meaning of "makai” is “toward the sea” and this is represented on several holes of the back-nine. The 13th green sits on the cliffs while the driveable par-4 14th hole runs precariously along the elevated coastline. Golfers will be able to take in views of the largest offshore reef in Hawaii, one of the most secluded beaches on the North Shore, aptly named Secret Beach, and just beyond that, the Kilauea Lighthouse, which is the northernmost point in the Hawaiian Islands.
In addition to golf, Princeville Makai Golf Club also offers Sunset Golf Cart Tours and the Mauka Disc Golf Course. The disc golf course opened to the public in 2018 and weaves around the 9-hole Woods Course, separate from the club’s main 18-hole Makai Course.
